Gold Philharmonic Coins pay tribute to the nation’s official orchestra group: the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Originally formed as an ad hoc orchestra that would perform with different members at different times, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra formalized its grouping and schedule in 1842 to become one of Austria’s greatest cultural assets.

On the obverse of the 2018 1/10 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin is the image of the Musikverein Pipe Organ. This giant organ is located inside of the Golden Music Hall in the home theater of the orchestra. The Golden Music Hall is found in the Innere Stadt borough of Vienna, the national capital of Austria.

The reverse of all 2018 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins includes a giant cello in the center of the design field, flanked on its sides by four violins and backed by a Vienna horn, bassoon, and harp in the background field. Engravings on this side read “Wiener Philharmonkier,” which is the German name for the orchestra. The obverse also has German inscriptions of “Republik Osterreich” and “1 Unze.”

Thomas Pesendorfer is the Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint. He created the obverse and reverse images in this series, which are now also found on the Silver Philharmonic Coin and the Platinum Philharmonic coin. The Austrian Mint was formed in 1194 by Duke Leopold V and is the sovereign mint of the nation today.
