When the United States Mint set out to produce a coin that numismatics would deem worthy for use on display or as an exhibition piece, the Burnished American Silver Eagle was the answer. First struck in 2006, these coins are produced using a special process by the US Mint and have low mintage numbers compared to the majority of coin series offered by the Mint. Together with the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, the PCGS is one of the strictest coin certification services around. An MS70 coin has no contact marks, blemishes, hairlines, or other flaws visible on its surface. The US Mint uses a special process similar to its proof coin series to strike the Burnished American Silver Eagle. Special blanks, or planchets, that have been burnished ahead of time are loaded into the West Point coining presses by hand before being struck with the die. The process of using burnished blanks creates a satin finish on the coin that gives it an enhanced appearance.

On the obverse and reverse sides of the Burnished American Silver Eagle are the standard images used on all coins in the series. Adolph A. Weinman’s depiction of Lady Liberty is used on the obverse, while John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle appears on the reverse.

When the United States Mint strikes Burnished American Silver Eagle coins, it does so using .999 fine silver sourced from within the US. Each coin in the series bears a face value of $1. With the exception of one special-edition coin, all Burnished American Silver Eagles have been produced at the West Point Mint facility since 2006.
