Between 1834 and 1837, the United States Mint adjusted the gold content of its circulation coins down from 22-karat gold. Some coins were briefly struck with a gold content just below 90%, but by 1837 the mint had settled at 90% gold content for all of its circulation coins. In 1933, gold coining ended in the US. When the American Gold Eagle debuted, it marked the first 22-karat gold issued by the mint in over 150 years. The 22-karat composition of Gold Eagles includes 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.

All 2020 1 oz American Gold Eagles with a Mint State 69 certification have full, original mint luster with no more than two minor detracting flaws present. Examples of acceptable flaws at this grade level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be located outside of the primary focal points of the coin.

First Strike labels such as those included with these coins indicate the arrival time of the coins for grading. A First Strike coin is one that was received for grading within the initial 30-day window of release from the US Mint.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the vision of Liberty on the obverse of 2020 American Gold Eagle coins. He originally intended the strike to be in high relief, but when he designed in 1907 the US Mint lacked the technology to effectively strike the design as such.

Miley Busiek created the image of an American bald eagle family for the reverse of 2020 American Gold Eagle coins in 1986. It depicts a male flying over a nest with a female and hatchling within.
