When King Edward IV came to power in England, the Black Bull of Clarence gained greater prominence in the Royal Arms. Edward IV wasn’t the only member of his family to use the bull as a symbol. His younger brother Richard III, who would rule as the last Yorkist King following Edward VI, also used the bull in his Royal Arms. The Black Bull of Clarence was often featured in a Royal Arms that had a complex royal shield included.

The Royal Shield featured in the Royal Arms that includes the Black Bull of Clarence is a quartered shield with two different heraldic symbols used in the quadrants. The upper-right and lower-left quadrants bear the three golden Lions of England adopted by Richard I as classic symbols of English rule. The upper-left and lower-right quadrants have the golden lilies of France which were added by Edward III to support his claim to the French throne.
