Somalia Silver Elephant coins were originally struck by the Bavarian State Mint for the nation of Zambia. As of 2004, the mint produces the coins for Somalia with a face value listed in Somali Shillings.

The reverse features the coat of arms for the nation of Somalia. The coat of arms includes a heraldic shield held by two leopards, with a singular star in the center over a backdrop of horizontal lines.
