The expansion and improvement of the coin program since the end of 2015 has just added to the allure of these beautiful coins. Today, the 2017 5 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coin is available from JM Bullion for the first time ever.

The Somalia Silver Elephant originally debuted in 2004, but the coin series had existed for five years prior to that. The Bavarian State Mint first released the coins in 1999 as the Zambian Elephant Series.

The overall theme of the series has remained the same since 1999. African elephants are always depicted in their natural habitat in Africa on the obverse, with a new design released every year. Recent releases have experienced increased interest from investors and collectors, and the mint has responded by expanding the series.

As of 2017, the coins are available as gold, silver, and platinum coins with eight weights now available in silver, seven in gold, and one platinum coin. The 2017 5 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coin is all-new for this year, along with other first-ever releases of three fractional weight silver coins, a 2 oz and 10 oz silver coin, and new ¼ oz and ½ oz gold coins.

The reverse of all Somalia Silver Elephant coins features the image of the coat of arms for Somalia, along with engravings that identify the year of issue, face value of the coin, and the nation of issue.

On the obverse of the 2017 5 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coin is the new African Wildlife Series design. Featured in the foreground is a large elephant standing in the grasses of the Savannah. In the background, a single hut with a palm tree is depicted, along with the sun/moon at the edge of the design field.

All 2017 5 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coins in this listing from JM Bullion are BU specimens. Coins in this grade show no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice minor flaws ranging from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks from striking during the production process.
