The American Gold Buffalo coin is the first coin from the United States Mint ever struck in .9999 fine gold. The US Mint lowered its gold coin content to .900 in 1837, and it wasn’t until the introduction of the Gold Eagle in 1986 that gold content was increased to pre-1837 levels. The American Gold Buffalo coin was first introduced in 2006. The American Gold Eagle has been the standard bearer among gold coins from the US Mint, but the Mint wanted a .9999 gold coin to compete with the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and other sovereign gold coins with higher gold contents. This coin reintroduces the Indian Head nickel design created by James Earle Fraser, which debuted on the famous nickel in 1913.

On the obverse side of the coin is Fraser’s depiction of an American Indian chieftain. The right-profile portrait was designed using a combination of facial features from three real-life chieftains. The reverse bears a recreation of Black Diamond, a resident bison at New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The coin has a “W” mint mark on the obverse side, identifying it as a product of the West Point Mint.
