Congress authorized the American Gold Eagle coin program in 1985 with passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act. The first coins were struck in 1986 in bullion and proof versions. Since that time, the coins have been struck every year in bullion, and all years except 2009 in proof. An uncirculated coin was added to the series in 2006.
