The 1992 production year of the Proof American Gold Eagle was one of immense transition. For starters, the coins saw a significant drop in production across all four weights in the proof versions. The 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle saw its production drop 12,000 coins from the year before.

Across the greater American Gold Eagle series, the US Mint made a major adjustment in the date marks issued on its coins. Since the coin’s introduction in 1986, the US Mint had used Roman numerals, but in 1992 it switched to Arabic numbering.
