The Silver Maple Leaf coin was the first major silver bullion coin offered in .9999 pure silver content. Though the American Eagle and Chinese Panda were offered sooner in the 1980s than the Silver Maple Leaf, the Maple Leaf beat both those coins to the punch with a .9999 pure silver coin. Neither of its major competitors are struck in .9999 to this day, making the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf one of a precious few major silver bullion coins with this purity level.

In the 1990s, the demand for Silver Maple Leaf coins was slipping. With the exception of a bump in demand that would send the coins increasing by one million in 1993, the 1992 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin marks one of the lowest mintage figures in the program’s history. In fact, only the coins struck from 1995 to 1997 had lower mintage figures.

On the obverse of the 1992 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the third-generation portrait of Her Majesty used on Canadian coinage, and just the second to appear on the obverse of the Silver Maple Leafs. Designed in 1990 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, this is the first artwork of the Queen’s image created by a Canadian artist.

The reverse of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf bears the sugar maple leaf, an international symbol of the nation of Canada since its foundation and used as imagery for the original French colonies of the region dating back to the 1700s. Engravings on this face include the nation of issue, purity, weight, and metal content of the coin.
