Known officially as the Republic of Rwanda, the nation of Rwanda is a landlocked country in central Africa. Although the nation is landlocked, Rwanda is located in an area of Africa known as the Great Lakes Region and has an environment dominated by mountain ranges in the west and savannas in the east.

The Rwandan Lunar Ounce Series was introduced in 2017 with the Year of the Rooster. All designs in the series share a similar background design element on the obverse face of the coins.
