For the first release in the Nautical Ounce collection, the Rwandan Santa Maria Silver Coin commemorates the 525^th anniversary of Columbus’ journey across the Atlantic Ocean in search of lands to cultivate, explore, and ultimately colonize in the New World. Though he sailed with three ships, it was the Santa Maria that was his flagship.

On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz Rwandan Santa Maria Nautical Ounce Silver Coin you’ll find various nautical themes in the design. The central piece is that of the Santa Maria gliding across the ocean waters as it heads for the New World. In the upper right there is a stylized compass and the top of the field as various instruments sailors of the day used for navigation.

The Santa Maria was launched in the year 1460, having been constructed in Pontevedra, Galicia, in the north-west regions of Spain. The ship was said to displace about 100 tons and had a single deck with three small masts. The name of the ship, translated into English from its full and original Spanish name, means “The Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception.”

The reverse of the Rwandan Santa Maria Nautical Ounce Silver Coin features the image of Rwanda’s national crest. Engravings on this coin are featured in a native tongue of Rwanda, and includes the Central Bank of Rwanda’s name and the face value of the coin in the local currency of Francs.
