The image features a bald eagle atop the arm of a cactus as it is locked in battle with a serpent. Mexico’s coat of arms is said to reflect the struggle between the nation, the eagle, and the slithering grip of the Spanish Empire, the snake.

Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, the Mexican Mint is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere. Opened to refine gold and silver found in the New World by Spanish conquistadors, the mint also coined currency for all Spanish Empire colonies in the New World.
