The Mexican Libertad was first introduced in 1982 as a silver bullion coin. The design on the coin features the Angel of Independence, a prominent symbol in Mexican history. The reverse side of the coin typically depicts the Mexican coat of arms surrounded by various historical coats of arms used throughout Mexico’s history.

Since 1982, 1 oz Silver Libertads have featured two obverse and two reverse design variations. From 1982 to 1995, Libertad was featured on the reverse in the same front-facing effigy introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1921 on the Centenario. As of 1996, the modern left-profile effigy of Libertad in three-quarter relief is shown on the coins. Additionally, the obverse originally featured a simple, classic depiction of the national seal from 1982 to 1999. In 2000, the Mexican Mint introduced a clean, modern depiction of the seal surrounded by 10 historic versions of the Mexican coat of arms.

Obverse design elements on the Mexican Silver Libertad Coin feature the image of Libertad. Whether it is the first or second iteration of the design, Libertad is featured atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column with a laurel wreath in her right hand and broken chains in her left. The original design is more tightly focused on Libertad, while the modern design offers a wider perspective of Libertad atop the column with the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background.

Reverse visuals on 1 oz Silver Libertads include the Mexican coat of arms at the center. The original reverse comes with only the national seal at the center depicting a Mexican golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus with a serpent in its beak. The modern reverse features this same design surrounded by 10 historic depictions of the seal that date back to the 16^th century and the Aztec’s Codex Mendoza.
