The history of the Vancouver Canucks team name pre-dates the modern NHL franchise. The first team in the city to play under that banner was the Vancouver Canucks of the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) from 1945 to 1952. From 1952 to 1970, the franchise was a member of the World Hockey League (WHL), and joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1970 as an expansion team.

In the Passion to Play series from the Royal Canadian Mint, the seven modern NHL franchises located in Canadian cities are celebrated. The reverse field of each coin features a colorized image of children from those local communities playing hockey, with the franchise logo for a respective team featured above the design.
