During the colonial period in the Caribbean’s history, competition for rum sales among island planters was fierce as everyone looked to profit off the popularity of the drink. Security was often required for the ships that brought rum from distillers to consumers throughout the West Indies and the colonies of North America.

Planters often turned to the Royal Navy in hopes of garnering protection for shipments against pirate intervention. Pirates hoped to steal loads and sneak them into high-tax port cities, while the Revenue Cutters of the Royal Navy sought to escort and protect shipments.

On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz Colorized Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner Silver Coin is the image of an armed frigate awaiting a load of rum. The wooden barrels rest on the sand in the foreground along with a half-empty bottle of the beloved spirit. This side of the coin includes the colorized layer applied to the design which brings the wooden hull and masts of the ship to live with vibrant color.

The obverse of the 2018 Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner Silver Coin includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This depiction of the Queen is the fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint.
