Shawnee National Forest is located in southern Illinois, and is actually a wide swath of land that was once exhausted farmland. In an effort to reclaim and rebuild the soil erosion caused by decades of farming, the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s and 1940s to not only put Americans to work, but also to regrow the forests in the Shawnee Hills.

Each of the 2016 5 oz ATB Shawnee National Forest Silver coins in this product listing has brilliant coloring added to the reverse design. Completed by the Hamburg Emporium in Germany, the colorization adds life and vitality to the design, with natural hues representative of the native climate in the coin’s design.

On the reverse is the image of Shawnee National Forest, complete with natural tones. The image features camel rock, a formation that mimics the appearance of a camel and its humpback as it lays down on the ground.

The obverse depicts the common design on all ATB coins, that of President George Washington in left-profile relief. This image is used on all American 25-cent pieces, and was created by John Flanagan in 1932. No images on this face have been colorized.

The United States Mint does not colorize any of its gold or silver products, which is why these coins had colorization features added by Hamburg Emporium instead.
