The Battles of Saratoga took place on September 19 and October 7, 1777 outside of Stillwater in Saratoga County, New York. The two decisive battles were the climax of the Saratoga campaign in which the Americans sought to push British forces back to their base in New York City. General John Burgoyne of the British Army found himself surrounded in upstate New York by separate American forces. His two attempts to break out both resulted in failure.

Saratoga National Historical Park preserves the location in the town of Stillwater where American forces nabbed their first major victory of the war over British forces. The surrender of General Burgoyne and his army resulted in France officially entering the war as an ally of America, though it had already been supplying arms, munition, and other support. Spain also joined the war against Britain as a result of the victory at Saratoga.
