The 2016 release of the Chinese Silver Panda brings a number of changes to the coin program. Changing the design on the obverse face of the coin is a staple of this program each year. Though the panda theme remains consistent, the specific design is altered every year.

However, 2016 also brings with it a change in the weight markings on the Chinese Silver Panda. These popular coins are now measured in Grams, rather than Troy ounces, to bring production and measurements in line with the nation’s metric system.

On the obverse is the image of an adult panda as it makes its way along a tree trunk that appears to have fallen to the ground. The only engravings on this face are the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity, and the Chinese symbol for panda.

The reverse features its common design theme from all Chinese Panda coins, that of the Temple of Heaven. This structure has stood in central Beijing for over 400 years, serving as a place of worship, sacrifice, and cultural gatherings during its rich history. All Chinese Silver Panda coins are produced by the Chinese Mint, but lack mint marks to determine which particular Chinese Mint facility struck the coins in question.
