2016 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin (In Capsule)

Mexican Gold Libertad coins were actually introduced by the Mexican Mint one year before the popular Silver Libertad, but the production history of the gold version of the nation’s official bullion coin is much different than its silver counterpart. The 2016 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is available today from JM Bullion.

The Mexican Gold Libertad coin made its first appearance in 1981 in bullion, with a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coin available. That production run lasted just one year, and did not restart again until 1991.

Proof Mexican Gold Libertad coins also have a rocky mintage history. Just 883 coins in a 1 oz weight were produced in 1983. Nothing was struck again until 1989, when 704 coins were produced in the 1/2 oz weight. Regular production on an annual basis of the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad did not occur until 2004 with a 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad. The following year annual production started for the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz coins.

On the obverse of all 2016 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins is the image of the Winged Victory statue found in Mexico City. Her effigy was erected in Mexico City started in 1920 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence, along with the release of a gold Centenario coin, from which the modern Mexican Libertad draws its design inspiration.

The reverse of the 1/4 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin features the coat of arms for Mexico. There are 10 historic versions of the seal that have been used, but only the modern version is depicted on the reverse of these coins.
