As the nation of Mexico set about celebrating the centennial of its independence from Spain, the nation erected a statue of the angel of independence in the center of Mexico City. Known as Winged Victory, she was symbolic of the nation’s successful struggle for freedom against Spanish colonizers who had dominated Central America for almost 300 years.

On the obverse side of each of these 2010 1/10 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertads is the image of Winged Victory. Featured atop a pillar, she reaches forward with a wreath in her right hand, and the broken chains of colonization in her left hand. Additional engravings include the “OM” mint mark of the Mexican Mint, the face value, metal content, weight, and purity of the coin.

The reverse of each proof features the modern coat of arms for Mexico. Below the seal is a wreath, while the official name of the nation, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” is engraved above. Translated to English it means United Mexican States.

Each of these proof coins is struck using a special coining process by the Mexican Mint. Special planchets are struck multiple times by die casts to create the stunning finish of the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad coin. The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 and is North America’s oldest operating mint.
