On the reverse side of each coin is Ng’s interpretation of the Year of the Monkey. In his image a monkey clings to the branches of a peach tree and appears to stare the viewer right in the eyes. Engravings on this side include “Year of the Monkey,” “2016,” “Canada 10 Dollars,” and “Annee du Singe,” which is French for Year of the Monkey.

The obverse side of the coin bears Susanna Blunt’s 2003 depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured in right-profile relief, Her Majesty’s effigy is surrounded by two simple engravings. To her left is “Elizabeth II,” while “D.G. Regina” is on the right.

The Royal Canadian Mint was founded by the ruling British authorities in 1908 to process gold and silver found in the Yukon Territories at the end of the 19^th century.
