On the reverse side of the Spirit of Canada coin is one of the most unique interpretations ever on a Canadian coin. Designed by Steven Hepburn, you can see a cross-country journey on one 1/4 oz coin. Iconic images include the orca whales of the Pacific Coast, the northern coastline of the Canadian Arctic represented by a polar bear and her cub, the hayfields of Canada’s prairie provinces in the interior, and the Herring Seiner of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the Canadian Atlantic coast.

The obverse of the coin features that familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was created by Susanna Blunt in 2003 for use on all Canadian currency. It includes engravings of her name and the coin’s face value.

Each of these 2017 1/4 oz Canadian Silver The Spirit of Canada coins has a BU condition, with a special specimen finish. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but may feature minor flaws including breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks from striking during the production process. The specimen finish is truly unique, and results from double striking the blanks on numismatic presses. The result is an image with maximum visual impact that includes a brilliant relief over a background of matte.

The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in Ottawa in 1908. Today it has a secondary facility as well, which opened in Winnipeg in the 1980s to increase the coining capacity of the Royal Canadian Mint.
