Mexican Silver Libertad coins serve as the official bullion coin of the nation of Mexico. Like other sovereign coin series, the design of the Mexican Silver Libertad was inspired by a historic coin produced in Mexico. When the nation began its centennial celebration of independence in 1920, the Mexican Mint produced a special coin with iconic Mexican images.

On the reverse of these gold Centenario coins was the image of the Angel of Independence, who clutched a wreath in her right hand and the broken chains of colonialism in her left hand. The twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, named for a pair of ancient Aztec lovers, rise toward the horizon in the background.

These images were reimagined and refined for use on the Proof Mexican Silver Libertad when the coins were first introduced in 1983, with annual production commencing in 1986. These 1/10 oz. Proof Mexican Silver Libertad coins were first available in 1992, and is one of the most popular weights in the series.

On the reverse is a modern image of the Angel of Independence as redesigned in 2000. Engravings include the weight, metal content, year of issue, and purity of the coin. A Mexican Mint mark, “OM,” is included on this side as well.

The obverse of these 1/10 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad coins features the coat of arms for Mexico. A Mexican eagle is featured wrestling with a serpent from its perch atop a cactus, with a wreath encompassing the bottom of the image and the phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” along the top.
