The 2002 American Silver Eagle program saw one of the highest mintage levels in program history to date, trailing only 1987. Following the terror attacks of 9/11 and the uncertainty that gripped the stock markets in the subsequent months, investors turned to precious metals as a salvation to protect their hard-earned cash.

Bullion coin production in 2002 skyrocketed from 9.0 million in 2001 to 10.5 million in 2002. While the Proof American Silver Eagle saw a dip of almost 100,000 coins from 2001, the overall mintage in 2002 was up a little more than 1.4 million from the previous year. Mintage levels would stabilize in the years to come, but it was clear that the American Silver Eagle’s bullion and proof versions were gaining popularity that would see it maintain higher mintage levels than in the 1980s and 1990s.

Weinman, this depiction of Liberty appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947 and is widely considered one of the finest coin designs from America’s Golden Age of coin design.

The reverse of the 2002-W 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle Coin features the heraldic eagle of the United States. Used on American coins as early as 1794, this depiction of the eagle is a modernized version from former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti.
