The United States Mint will celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the nation’s beloved silver bullion coin program, as well as its counterpart the American Gold Eagle. The American Silver Eagle coin was introduced in 1986 as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Originally available only in bullion and proof, the program expanded in 2006 to include the regular production of a burnished coin.

For the 30^th Anniversary celebration of the American Silver Eagle, the United States Mint has already announced that the burnished and proof coins will be struck with a special edge lettering to commemorate 30 years of the coin program. All American Silver Eagle coins have been struck with a reeded edge since 1986, making this the first change in design in program history.

The bullion coins will not be impacted by this change and will maintain a reeded edge in their design. As you might expect, the smooth edge reading “30th Anniversary” is a one-time alteration, and 2017 Proof American Silver Eagle and burnished coins will feature the usual reeded edge.

American Silver Eagle coins aren’t the only item celebrating a milestone in 2016. This year marks the 100^th anniversary of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Originally created in 1916 for use on the nation’s half-dollar coin, prior to her reintroduction on the American Silver Eagle in 1986, Walking Liberty was last seen 39 years earlier on the final Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1947.

On the reverse is the modern version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. John Mercanti was the recently appointed Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1986, creating this design at that time and staying in the position until his retirement in 2010.
