Yet again in 2000, the prices for silver remained stable at higher levels than had been seen in the early 1990s. As silver entered the 1990s, the price per ounce was bouncing around the $3 to $4 per ounce range. Higher prices had set in around $5.20 per ounce in the late 1990s, and in 2000 silver entered a new decade averaging $4.95 per ounce.

After an impressive performance in 1999 that saw the Royal Canadian Mint strike 1.229 million Silver Maple Leafs, the coining of the official silver bullion coin fell dramatically to just 403,652 coins in the 2000 issue of the coins. However, this would prove a temporary downturn as the coins went down minimally in 2001 and then went on a ten-year growth streak that stretched from the 2002 issue to the 2011 issue.

On the reverse of all Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins you’ll find the design of the sugar maple leaf. The maple leaf design here is from Walter Ott and first appeared on the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979. The sugar maple leaf was originally used by French colonists in Canada in the 1700s as a symbol of the region. When the confederation movement started in 1867, the maple leaf was at the heart of the original anthem of Canada written by Alexander Muir and entitled The Maple Leaf Forever.

The obverse of 2000 1 oz Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is found on this coin in a regal depiction that is the most ornate of the four designs of Queen Elizabeth II to feature on modern Canadian coinage.
