The 1996 issue year for the Proof American Gold Eagles saw drastic drops in demand across the board. It is difficult to maintain strong demand for proof coins. Typically, the first issue year is among the most valuable, followed by those issues with special date marks or mint marks. The 1995 coins benefited from the 10th-anniversary celebration for the Gold Eagle, with 1996 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagles down by 10,000 in overall mintage.

The reverse of the 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle includes the design from Miley Busiek. Created in 1986 and used only on the Gold Eagles, this design features a female guarding a hatchling under her wing as a male flies overhead.
