Established by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. American Gold Eagles marked the return of 22-karat gold coins in American coining. Beginning in 1834, the United States adopted a gold content cap of .900 for all coins. When the American Gold Eagle was announced with a content of .999, it was the first time in more than 150 years that crown gold, the traditional English standard for gold content, had been used in American coins.

On the obverse side of each coin, Lady Liberty is depicted in her traditional robes striding confidently toward the future. A torch in her right hand provides a guiding light for the nation, as the olive branch in her left hand represents the nation’s desire for peace.

The reverse depicts a male bald eagle returning to its nest with an olive branch in its talons. In the nest, hatchlings are being vigilantly looked after by a female bald eagle. The coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value are inscribed on the reverse.
