Dia de Muertos is the original Spanish term for the holiday celebrating the dead and departed from this world. Anglophone countries often use the phrasing of Dia de los Muertos to refer to the Mexican holiday that is celebrated throughout central and southern regions of Mexico. The tradition came to Mexico with Spanish colonizers, but it also maintains aspects of previous Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec cultures.

One of the elements from Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec celebrations of the Day of the Dead is the Calavera, or the sugar skull. This representation of the human skull is historically made out of sugar or clay during the Day of the Dead celebrations. The original purpose of the skulls was to display them as decorations near the tombs and graves of lost loved ones.
