The Chinese lunar calendar positions each of the 12 animals in its regular cycle in a particular order. Chinese history has numerous stories to explain the ranking of the animals, but the most common is some form of a race to meet with the Jade Emperor. As the goat arrived eight, it appears annually in the eighth year of the cycle.

The goat and horse, according to Chinese cultural lore, are kind and modest creatures. During the race to meet the emperor, the goat and horse were so kind to one another that each tried to let the other arrive first. The emperor saw this politeness in the creatures and ranked the seventh and eighth respectively.
