Unicorns have been written about and fascinated over for thousands of years of human history. The first appearance of unicorns in any written or visual record comes from the Indus Valley Civilization on the Indian subcontinent, one of the three cradles of civilization in the ancient world.

Many modern inhabitants of the Western world associate the unicorn with Greek mythology and European folklore, however, to the Greeks the unicorn was anything but a myth. In fact, if you research Greek mythology you will find no mention of the unicorn as a mythological beast. That is because Greek natural history writers were the ones recording the existence of the unicorn as they believed the beast to be reality and knew it to live in India, a distant and spectacular corner of the world to the Greeks.
