Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design for the Indian Gold Eagle coin was inspired by the changes occurring in the nation’s sense of identity during that period. On the front of the coin, he has depicted Lady Liberty attired in the traditional war bonnet of the Native American Indians. This artistic revision was not only meant to reflect the country’s new found respect for these indigenous people, but also its willingness to integrate them into the mainstream American culture.
