Although circulation silver dollars had been out of circulation since the end of the Peace Silver Dollar Series in 1935, the circulation Eisenhower Dollars had a copper-nickel clad composition.

These 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar coins were issued as collectible coins. In 1970, a compromise was reached among legislators and the United States Mint to issue the Eisenhower Dollar with 40% silver only in a collectible issue. The coins would be issued by the mint as BU and Proof specimens from 1971 to 1976 only.

Dwight D. Eisenhower is considered one of the most influential men in American history and considered today to have been one of the best Presidents of the United States. Eisenhower was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point who served in World War I and would rise to earn status as a 5-Star General in the US Army during World War II. He was eventually appointed Supreme Leader of the Allied Forces and led the Allied invasion of Normandy which broke Nazi Germany’s stranglehold on the continent.

On the obverse of the 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar Coins is the left-profile bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Born in Denison, Texas in 1890, he was raised in Abilene, Kansas and died in Washington D.C. at the age of 78 in March 1969.

The reverse of all 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollars features the depiction of an American bald eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons and the outline of the North American continent visible on planet Earth in the background. Frank Gasparro designed both images on this coin and his reverse design is similar to that of the Apollo 11 mission which reached the moon. As President of the United States, Eisenhower established NASA in response to the Soviet Union’s success with Sputnik.
