Select elements on the coin’s reverse design field have an application of 24-karat gold. This thin layer of gold enhances the visual contrast and beauty of the coin design and is applied to four of the musical instruments, along with the inscription of ”Wiener Philharmoniker,” the German-language name for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

On the obverse of 2019 1 oz Austrian Silver Philharmonic Gilded Coin is the image of the Great Organ found within the Musikverein Golden Hall. Located in Innere Stadt in the capital city of Vienna, this is the site of the majority of the performances by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra each year.

The reverse of 2019 Austrian Silver Philharmonic Gilded Coins includes a selection of nine musical instruments. Included are four violins, a cello, harp, bassoon, and French horn. Two of the violins, the harp, and the bassoon have the gilded layer of gold applied to help them stand out from the crowded field of images.

Thomas Pesendorfer, the Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint, developed both the obverse and reverse designs used on these coins. He created them in 1989 for the Gold Philharmonic and they have been used on the Silver Philharmonic since its 2008 debut.
