During the Third Crusade in the Middle East, Western forces under the command of King Phillip II of France and King Richard I, Richard the Lionheart, of England successfully captured the city of Acre. Duke Leopold V of Austria arrived after the siege was completed and the city had capitulated, but when he asked for equal favor in dividing the wealth of the city he was denied by his Western counterparts.

As King Richard I of England returned home through Europe with his forces, he was stopped by the army of Duke Leopold V and imprisoned within Austria as revenge for his slight in Acre. To earn his freedom, Richard the Lionheart paid Leopold V a sum of 15 tonnes of silver that the latter used to found the Austrian Mint in Vienna.

On the obverse of 2019 1 oz Austrian 825^th Anniversary Leopold V Silver Coins is the image of a crusader from the forces of Duke Leopold V. The figure is depicted in left-profile relief as he rides his horse into battle and engravings note the nation of issue, year of issue, weight, and metal content. The markings are in German, the native tongue of Austria.

The reverse of 2019 Austrian 825^th Anniversary Leopold V Silver Coins includes the frontal image of Duke Leopold V. He is featured with his battle armor on and a sword in his hand. In the background, a banner bears the year “1194” to denote the founding of the Austrian Mint.
