The coins in the Silver Emu series are limited in mintage each year and housed individually inside of protective plastic capsules. The Silver Emu is the latest silver coin in a growing portfolio of wildlife-themed coins from the Perth Mint. The 1990 introduction of the Silver Kookaburra set the standard for Perth Mint silver bullion with new designs on the reverse each year. The program spent 17 years on its own before the Silver Koala was introduced in 2007.

Since that time though, Perth Mint has picked up the pace in introducing new silver bullion coins issued on an annual basis. The Silver Wedge Tail Eagle coins debuted in 2014 and have become the Perth Mint’s third-best-selling coins. The Silver Kangaroo became an annual silver bullion staple in 2016 after years as a proof, and occasional bullion option, and also brought with it the now-standard use of .9999 pure silver in Perth Coins. The Silver Emu joined these other coins in 2018.

On the obverse of 2019 Australian Silver Emu Coins is the sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to feature on Australian coins. It was developed by Jody Clark and is the first portrait of the Queen to feature her neckline and shoulders on Australian coins since 1966.

The reverse of 2019 1 oz Australian Silver Emu Coins includes a new emu design for the year. This year’s design features a male and female emu standing near a dry creek bed with a barren tree in the background.
