The American Palladium Eagle debuted in 2017 after years of waiting following approval for such a coin back in 2010. The American Palladium Eagle, like other American Eagle coins, brings a historic coin design back to life. The Mercury Dime created by Adolph A. Weinman was in circulation from 1916 to 1945, at which point it was replaced by the current US dime design featuring President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

On the obverse of these 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Palladium Eagle Coins is the left-profile portrait of Winged Liberty. This vision of Liberty was created by Weinman in 1916 as the US looked to revamp all of its circulation coin designs with newer, American-inspired designs. The coin became known as the Mercury Dime because Weinman’s vision of Liberty with a winged, Phrygian cap reminded people of the Roman messenger god Mercury.

The reverse face of the 2018 Proof American Palladium Eagle also features a design from Weinman. This particular vision of the American bald eagle as it sits on a rock cliff clutching a branch in its talons comes from the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal issued in 1907.
