The Black Bull was the primary symbol of King Edward IV, the first Yorkist king to sit on the throne of England. He used a royal shield that was quartered. It featured elements including the three gold lions of England adopted by Richard I and the three golden lilies of France adopted by Edward III in support of his claim to France’s throne.
