The roots of the modern Gold Angel design from Pobjoy Mint and the Isle of Man date all the way back to 1340s France. At this time, the French issued a gold coin known as the angelot or ange. The English gold angel was introduced by King Edward IV in 1465 and was produced through the reign of King Charles I, with the last coins issued in 1642.

In fact, the English gold angel of the past has roots that go back even further in England. Those English gold coins were considered a successor to the English noble gold coin introduced by King Edward III in 1344. The modern Isle of Man Gold Angel reinvents the same design used during the reign of King Edward IV.
