As China fought back against Britain selling opium to its citizens in the 19^th century, two Opium Wars were fought. The result was a British victory, the loss of Hong Kong (ceded to Britain), and an influx of outside trade dollars. On this side of the coin, you’ll find the oriental border pattern based upon the Chinese-themed designs of rooms in Buckingham Palace and the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.

On the obverse of all 2018 Britannia coins is the fifth-generation impression of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s right-profile effigy appears on all British coins, and has since her ascension to the throne in 1952. This particular design was created in 2015 by the Royal Mint’s Jody Clark.
