Each new issue of the Chiwoo Cheonwang Series depicts the famed God of War in a different stage of preparation for battle. The designs have progressed over time to feature him preparing for battle, charging into the fight, and surveying the scene in the aftermath of yet another victory.

The Chiwoo Cheonwang Series launched in 2016 to celebrate a man considered a God of War in Korean mythology. Chiwoo was the leader of one of the founding tribes of China and it said to have been unstoppable in battle. In addition to mythical powers assigned to him, Chiwoo is revered for the undefeated run of his soldiers in battle. Rumors suggest his forces did not lose a battle over the course of 10 years of battle.

On the reverse of 2018 1/4 oz South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals is the image of the battle-hardened leader on horseback. He fiercely rides his steed into battle in this design and levels his sword to cut down an enemy. Odds are that this is the view most of his enemies saw of him in battle just before they were cut down.

The obverse of 2018 South Korean Gold Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals includes his battle shield. On the shield Chiwoo carried into battle he emblazoned the face of Do ggae bi. A hobgoblin-like creature, his grotesque face was meant to intimidate Chiwoo’s enemies in battle and was also used every day by Koreans to guard homes against evil spirits.
