Year of the Dog coins from the Perth Mint are available in both gold and silver, with a different dog featured in the Year of the Dog celebration for each. On the Australian Gold Dog Coins, designer Ing Ing Jong chose the Labrador Retriever, a venerable service dog that serves as a guide dog for the blind or therapy dog for those with other conditions.

Coin designer Ing Ing Jong joined the Perth Mint in 2011, and took over designing the images for the Lunar Series II collection in 2013. A 2006 graduate of Perth’s Central TAFE School of Art and Design, Jong draws inspiration from Disney and admires how their animators have managed to convey emotions through sketches.

On the reverse of the 2018 1/10 oz Australian Gold Dog Coin is the Labrador Retriever, pictured standing atop a pile of rocks with a stylized pine tree rising above it in the background. Other inscriptions on this face include “Year of the Dog,” the Perth Mint’s mint mark, and the Chinese character for dog.

The obverse of all Australian Gold Dog Coins includes the image of Queen Elizabeth II. British monarchs always appear on the obverse of British and commonwealth coinage, with Queen Elizabeth II captured in right-profile relief since 1953 by various artists. This is the fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

All 2018 1/10 oz Australian Gold Dog Coins are in BU condition. Coins in this condition show no signs of wear and tear, but striking blanks can often result in minor flaws from production. These include the potential for breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
