The Royal Canadian Mint is releasing a series of Batman v. Superman-themed coins throughout 2016, including both silver and gold versions in proof. To date, this is the only gold coin planned for the series. The release of these coins coincides with the upcoming Batman v. Superman feature film.

On the reverse face of these coins you’ll find the image of Superman and Batman standing back to back, with the Man of Steel in his traditional blue-and-red uniform. Batman is featured with his back toward you and Superman in his all-black uniform. Silhouette profiles of both superheroes’ faces are also featured on the reverse, but Superman’s face is on Batman’s side and vice versa.

The obverse features the image of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. Designed by Susanna Blunt, this 2003 depiction includes engravings that read “Elizabeth II,” “D.G. Regina,” and “Canada.” Engravings of the face value and year of issue are on the obverse with the Batman v. Superman design.

The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in the federal capital of Ottawa in 1908 to produce and refine gold and silver discovered in the Yukon Territories in the late 19th century. Following decades of increasing demand for commemorative and bullion coins, as well as the stress of circulation coin production, the RCM expanded in 1980 to include a second facility in Winnipeg.
