Since their introduction in 1980, Chinese Panda coins in both silver and gold have been offered with weights listed in Troy ounces. The standard measurement used for the vast majority of bullion and proof coins around the globe, the Chinese government has opted to shift focus and adopt the metric system.

In keeping with the nation’s use of the metric system for weights and measures, all Chinese Panda coins from the 2016 release year (and forward) will be weighed and marked in Grams instead.

On the obverse of the coin is the all-new panda design from the Chinese Mint. A new image of the cuddly creatures features on the coin each year, and this year depicts a panda as it climbs along a tree trunk. Engravings on this face include a Chinese symbol for panda and the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity.

The reverse shows you an image of the external facade of the Temple of Heaven, which is located in south-central Beijing. This image has appeared, unaltered, on the reverse of Chinese Panda coins since their first year of issue.

The Chinese Mint is overseen by the government and controlled by the People’s Bank of China. It not only produces bullion and proof coins such as the 2016 100 Gram Chinese Gold Panda, but also circulation coins and banknotes.
