2015 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala Coin (BU)

The 2015 silver bullion program from the Perth Mint is rolling out, and among the impressive new coins is the 2015 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala coin. The koala is known around the world and is often associated with the natural wildlife found on the Australian continent. The koala has featured on numerous commemorative coins from the Perth Mint in recent years, including previous 1 kilo coins.

The Perth Mint is the lone facility still operating from the time period of English dominance on the Australian continent. The facility in Perth was the last of three mints to open in what was then a colony of Great Britain. The Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint both opened before the Perth Mint as part of the Royal Mint of London. The Perth Mint was opened in 1899.

The 2015 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala features a brand new design that is vastly different from the previous koala series. Again this year, the Perth Mint has produced dazzling work displaying textured, long hair of the koala. This feature is often difficult to produce with clarity, making the 2015 coin all the more impressive.

On the 2015 coin, a full-size koala is featured resting in a tree on the open landscape of the outback. The koala’s gaze is fixed on an unknown object in the distance, with expansive grasslands behind it giving way to a mountainous landscape.

On the reverse side of the 2015 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala is the image of the koala itself. Above the image is the phrase “Australian Koala,” while below are the words “2015 1 oz 999 silver.” On the obverse side of the coin are the standard markings of the Perth Mint. In the middle is a side-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Above her majesty’s head are the words “Elizabeth II” and “Australia.” Below her head, the weight, purity, year of minting, and legal tender value are stamped onto the coin.
