An American national park located in the state of Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve contains sand dunes that reach up to 750 feet in height. The park was originally created as Great Sand Dunes National Monument in 1932 during the administration of President Herbert Hoover. The park earned its formal status as a national park in September 2004.

John Flanagan created the portrait based upon a bust of Washington completed in 1786.

Sand dunes rise in the middleground near the banks of the creek, while the massive Sangre de Cristo Mountains are featured in the distant background.
