1999 was a major year for the American Gold Eagle. For the third straight year, mintage had increased. That was the first time in the coin’s history that it had experienced three consecutive years of increasing demand. Even more significantly, it marked the highest mintage level in the coin’s now 30-year history.

There was another significant occurrence in 1999.
