On the obverse of the coins, you’ll find the iconic image of Liberty which Augustus Saint-Gaudens created in 1907. This design originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle and was modified for these coins to include a total of 50 stars in the design field around Liberty. When first issued, the design had only 46 stars and was updated to 48 in 1912, but went out of circulation in 1933 before Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union.

The reverse face of all Proof American Gold Eagle coins includes Miley Busiek’s design of the bald eagle. In this case, it’s a design which includes an entire family of bald eagles. As a male flies overhead, a female stands guard over a group of hatchlings in a nest.
