The Austrian Gold Corona coin was first introduced by the Austrian Mint during a period of national history known as the Austrian Empire. The coins became the first gold currency ever issued by Austria during the empire’s reform of currency that began in 1892. The first coins issued during this reformation were the 10 and 20 crown (or Corona) coins.

The reverse of the Austrian Gold Corona coins includes a regal depiction of the coat of arms of Austria. The embellished coat of arms is superimposed over the crowned imperial double-headed eagle of Austria, with engravings of the face value of the coin (100 Corona).
